Through this post, we will focus on the extrusion process. In particular, we will understand the pressure, temperature, heating, and cooling inside the Extruder Barrel. Proper temperature and heating control of the plastic inside the extrusion barrel is vital to achieving high-quality output whether you are a profile extruder, wire coating, sheet extruder, or any of the downstream processes. If the molten plastic does not have the desired properties when it reaches the die head, you will often have difficulty achieving quality production.
Extruder Barrel Pressure
The pressure inside the extruder barrel is high during the Extrusion Process. Barrels are designed to withstand operating pressures of up to 10,000 psi or 700 bar for most extruders. Normal operating pressure is usually between 1,000 and 5,000 psi. Or 70 and 350 times.
Too much pressure can damage the barrel. To protect the extruder barrel from overpressure, several methods have been developed. A shear pin can be installed on a swing gate. The rupture disc can be installed on the die end of the barrel. If the melt pressure exceeds the rating of the rupture disc, the disc fails, and the pressure is relieved. As a warning device, a pressure transducer with an alarm is also common. It can be set to alert the operator or turn off the extruder.
Extruder Barrel Temperature Regulation
To control the temperature, the temperature can be improved. Microscopic – up to 3 inches – with specialized or advanced technology. Can be used on a large scale. Into the atmosphere and from a heat controller into the atmosphere.
Extruder Barrel Heating
The barrel must be heated for operation. Most barrel heaters are electric. Cast heaters are cast aluminum split cylinders with insulated resistance wires embedded inside. The simplest type of heater is the mica band heater. Mica band heaters consist of resistance wire coated between mica insulation with a steel enclosure for support. Ceramic heaters are used in applications with high heating requirements.
Cast aluminum and mica band heaters both require tight contact with the barrel, so periodic inspection and maintenance of heaters when necessary should be part of the routine. If they can’t transfer their heat to the barrel, the heater can burn out.
Extruder Barrel Cooling Design & Equipment
Barrel cooling is also an important part of the extrusion process. Extruder barrel cooling is necessary if the plastic gets too hot. The barrel can be cooled using air or liquid. Air-cooled barrels have a blower unit and a plenum chamber at the bottom of the barrel in each temperature zone. The blower is turned on by the barrel temperature controller upon reaching the upper set point.
