About 65% of all plastic in use today passes through an extruder. In order to extrude a thermoplastic material, it must first be softened (usually by heat) so that it can be shaped inside an extrusion machine (extruder). Most extrusion machines are single-screw machines and it is the screw that drives the material into one long piece toward the extrusion die.
Post-extrusion processes
A variety of additional operations can also be applied to plastic products as they come out of the die in their extruded form. Some of these operations may be accomplished by standard or custom equipment added inline to the extruder, or as additional steps performed by other staff and equipment in the extrusion facility. Common examples of post-extrusion processes include:
- Vacuum sizing (during the extrusion process)
- Punching
- Printing
- Part/batch number labeling
- Cutting to a specified length, for either convenient shipping or finished product length

The plastic extrusion method is typically used for high volume manufacturing where the raw plastic material is melted and formed into a continuous profile. Extruded plastic products include pipe and tubing, weather stripping, window frames, plastic sheeting, adhesive tape, and wire insulation.
For products such as plastic sheets or film, cooling is achieved by pulling them through a set of cooling rolls. In sheet extrusion, these rolls not only provide the required cooling but also determine the sheet thickness and surface texture.
